Boston MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority)

Rapid Transit in Boston goes by the name of The “T” and includes subways, buses, trolleys, inter-harbor ferry service. Commuter rail or trains are also under the auspices of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

Visitors can ride the “T” by paying single fare or opting for the multi-day passports which are available for use on all four subway lines, bus lines and inter-harbor ferry services. Depending on expected usage a one day Visitor’s Pass starts at $6 per person which ranges up to a seven day pass for $22. These Visitor Passes may be purchased at Logan Airport T station, hotels in Boston and at the Boston Commons Visitor Information Center.

The four subway lines are color coded red, green, blue, and orange.

The Red Line -Takes travelers from the northwest Cambridge part of Greater Boston, southeast through downtown and further south towards Quincy, with a branch to the southwest at JFK / UMass.

From the downtown area north the stops are as follows: • Downtown Crossing • Park Street • Charles / MGH • Kendall / MIT • Central • Harvard • Porter • Davis • terminating at Alewife.

From the downtown area south the stops are as follows: • Downtown Crossing • South Station • Broadway • Andrew • Central • JFK / UMass (continuing southeast) • North Quincy • Wollaston • Quincy Center • Quincy Adams • terminating at Braintree. From JFK / UMass (continuing southwest) • Savin Hill • Fields Corner • Shawmut • Ashmont • Cedar Grove • Butler • Milton • Central Avenue • Valley Road • Capen St • terminating at Mattapan.

The Orange Line -Takes travelers from the northern areas of Greater Boston, south through downtown and further southwest towards Forest Hills.
From the downtown area north the stops are as follows: • Downtown Crossing • State • Haymarket • North Station • Community College • Sullivan Square • Wellington • Madison Center • terminating at Oak Grove.

From the downtown area southwest the stops are as follows: • Downtown Crossing • Chinatown • Medical Center • Back Bay • Mass Ave. • Ruggles • Roxbury Crossing • Jackson Square • Stony Brook • Green Street • terminating at Forest Hills.

The Blue Line -Takes travelers from the northeastern areas of Greater Boston, south through to the downtown area into the Government Center.

From the Government Center northeast, the stops are as follows: • State • Aquarium • Maverick • Logan Airport • Wood Island • Orient Heights • Suffolk Downs • Beachmont • Revere Beach • terminating at Wonderland.

From the Government Center northwest, the next and terminating stop is • Bowdoin

The Green Line -Takes travelers from the western areas of Greater Boston, east through to the downtown area, then northwest to Lechmere. The southern side of the line has several branches off the main line, one branches at Copley, one branches at Kenmore, another branches just before Fenway.

From the Government Center north, the stops are as follows: • Haymarket • North Station • Science Park • terminating across the Charles at Lechmere.

From the Government Center south, the stops are as follows: • Park Street • Boylston • Arlington • Copley (branch goes south to • Prudential • Symphony • terminating at Heath). From Copley west the main line stops are • Hynes / ICA • Kenmore (branch goes north and west to • Boston University • Harvard Avenue • terminating at Boston College ). From Kenmore west another branch terminates at Cleveland Circle, the green main line continues south and west with stops after Kenmore • Fenway • Longwood • Brookline Village • Brookline Hills • Reservoir • Chestnut Hill • Newton Center • Newton highlands • Eliot • Waban • Woodland • terminating at Riverside.

The Commuter Rail - comes into Greater Boston from outlying areas. The northern routes hook up with the Orange and Green subway lines north of the city at North Station. The southern routes terminate at South Station with subway connections to the Red Line. These commuter lines run much further afield with western routes headed toward at Worcester, Framingham, Filchburg and Needham Heights. Northern routes head toward Lowell, Reading, Haverhill, Ipswich and Rockport. Southern routes head towards Franklin, Providence, Attleboro, Lakeville and Plymouth.
